Let me be honest: the thing I’m most anxious about when traveling in Europe isn’t getting lost or missing a train. It’s my phone getting snatched.
After multiple trips to cities like London, Paris, and Munich, I’ve become almost obsessive about my phone security setup. Since I have a trip to Barcelona planned for six months from now, I want to make absolutely sure my phone is fully protected this time too. Pickpocketing in major European tourist areas is genuinely common, and most victims don’t realize their phone is gone until minutes later.
The solution isn’t paranoia — it’s building habits around gear that makes opportunistic theft much harder. Here is my ultimate anti-theft gear system, combining MagSafe ecosystems, heavy-duty straps, and clever accessories.
Why Your iPhone Case Choice Matters More in Europe
Pickpocketing in major European tourist areas is genuinely common. Crowded metro stations, busy markets, and popular sightseeing spots are prime hunting grounds for thieves. Most victims don’t realize their phone is gone until minutes later.
The solution isn’t paranoia — it’s building habits around gear that makes opportunistic theft much harder. A crossbody strap, a secure grip, and not having to pull your phone in and out of your bag constantly are the three pillars.
That’s where this case lineup comes in.
1. MOFT MOVAS Vegan Leather Case — My Daily Driver

This was the first case I bought when I upgraded to iPhone 15 Pro Max, and it immediately became my everyday travel companion.
The MOVAS material feels like premium leather but it’s actually vegan — lighter, more durable, and it doesn’t crack in cold weather. The slim profile means my phone doesn’t feel like a brick in my crossbody bag, and because it’s MagSafe compatible, my phone snaps cleanly onto my MagSafe charging pad back at the hotel without removing the case.
What I love most: it just looks expensive. When you’re in a nice restaurant in Paris or a boutique wine bar in Barcelona, it doesn’t scream “tourist with a fragile phone.”
Pair it with the MagSafe Stand & Strap below for the ultimate minimalist travel setup.
MOFT Snap-On MagSafe Stand & Card Holder — The Wallet Replacement
This is the accessory that changed how I travel in cities.
The MOFT Snap-On attaches magnetically to the back of any MagSafe-compatible case. It holds 2–3 cards (metro card, credit card, ID copy) and doubles as a kickstand for watching maps or videos at the airport. In my case, I put the safety prayer amulet I bought at a Japanese shrine in this card case.
MOFT Adjustable Phone Lanyard — the crossbody strap

My partner(🐼) used this setup during our Europe trip. It didn’t get in the way of the action camera worn around the neck, and it was perfect for preventing pickpocketing.

Actually, I used to use this too, but I broke it in 4 months. The related articles below are articles written at that time (Note: This is a Japanese article.)

2. UAG Civilian — The “Two-Hole” Smartphone Case

Finding a phone case with two dedicated strap holes is surprisingly difficult.
I searched endlessly right up until my trip to Europe and finally found this one. The Urban Armor Gear Civilian case features a strap hole on both the left and right sides, making it perfect for a crossbody strap.
- MagSafe Compatible: Built-in magnetic module.
- Shockproof: Meets military drop-test standards (MIL STD 810G-516.6).
The Strap That Ties It All Together: Peak Design Leash

With a two-hole case, you can use a professional camera strap. I chose the Peak Design Leash. The deciding factor for me was the anchor connector system—it has a 3-layer cord that can hold up to 90kg (approx. 200 lbs), making it extremely tough to cut or break.

The strap in the photo above is a color limited to the Peak Design Tokyo store. It cannot be purchased online. Please consider purchasing after confirming that it is a genuine product.
Neither UAG or MOFT smartphone case interferes with the thick glass film, so I use a thick film to prevent peeping.

Recently, I replaced it with a 360-degree peeping prevention film, and this ↓ I was able to paste it very beautifully. It has a plastic frame, and if you stick it according to it, it will be stuck.
3. The Horizontal Shoulder Strap Case (Budget-Friendly)

For our next trip, I upgraded to a case that allows the phone to hang horizontally. However, because this is a budget-friendly case, it does not support MagSafe natively, meaning the magnetic force on the back is reduced by half. The MOFT stand wouldn’t stick to it!
The Solution: Magnetic Ring Sticker
You can solve this by applying a magnetic enhancement ring sticker. I found a pack that comes with 4 sets of magnetic stickers, which is a great deal.

Used as a Grip

I attached a stand to act as a grip to keep the phone stable with one hand. Some famous brand grips can cost over $300, which is crazy! I repurposed a tripod part instead.
Substitute it with tripod parts! ( ↓)

“Manflot” is a manufacturer that has become a hot topic with a tripod that becomes compact for travel. A reliable manufacturer that is light and convenient but loved by professionals. I usually use it for cameras, but I also use it when shooting smartphone videos at home.

Hand Straps vs. Shoulder Straps
Hand Strap Details
Depending on the location, like a restaurant with a dress code, a crossbody shoulder strap can get in the way. In those situations, I recommend switching to a hand strap. You just loop it around your wrist when using your phone.
If you don’t use a strap, you might become a target for snatch-and-grab thieves on motorcycles while waiting at a traffic light. A slightly conspicuous hand strap sends a clear message: “My phone is tied to my wrist, so don’t even try it!”

I originally used a hand strap with a clear vinyl holder, but I later switched the holder to a fabric one. The included carabiner wasn’t the best quality, so I replaced it with a locking carabiner from Nite Ize. Since it locks, it won’t easily come off, and its small size means it doesn’t get in the way.
Hand Strap for GR3x (Camera)

I held my camera in my right hand almost the entire time while walking around town. You never want to miss a photo opportunity! However, no matter how careful you are, there are moments when you have to let go—like sitting down at a cafe or paying at a register. Pickpockets definitely target these moments, so I used a Peak Design hand strap (Cuff) to physically tie the camera to my wrist. The weight of the camera automatically tightens the loop, making it very secure and highly recommended.

Hands-Free Video Recording: Neck Mount
For recording vlogs hands-free, I use a neck mount with the DJI Osmo Action 4. It’s incredibly convenient for travel!

…Secret sale information
Now that the newer models are out, the DJI Osmo Action 4 has become so affordable it almost feels like a permanent sale! Here in Japan, the official DJI Amazon store runs a 22% OFF sale several times a year, bringing the price down to 34,000 JPY (about $214 USD at today’s exchange rate).
There is a good chance it might be even cheaper in your country, so I highly recommend checking your local Amazon store to see the current price!
